Texans 'Working Hard' To Sign Deshaun Watson To Extension

Jul 31, 2020 2:55 PM

Bill O'Brien revealed on Friday that the Houston Texans are "working hard" to sign Deshaun Watson to a long-term extension.

Watson made less than $3.8 million in 2019, which was just 4.88% of the Texans' cap. He is scheduled to make $4.4 million during the 2020 season.

"Deshaun is a great player, an even better person, and we want him here for a long time," O'Brien said. "... I know that we're working hard. We're not going to really talk about it in the media, but obviously we feel so strongly about him and the future of him in this offense, in this organization, and we want him here for a long time."

Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year, $503 million extension earlier this month as a fellow member of the 2017 draft class.

Cowboys Still Confident Deal With Dak Prescott Will Get Done

Jul 31, 2020 9:23 AM

The Dallas Cowboys missed the deadline to get a long-term contract done with Dak Prescott before the 2020 season, but neither side seems concerned.

In his first comments since the July 15 deadline came and went, Stephen Jones suggested talks between the two sides were amicable.

"We had a great visit with him at the deadline. We pushed to try to have a few more changes here and there to see if we could get it done," Jones said. "But he's got such a great outlook on the Dallas Cowboys, our football team, and he's ready to go out and win a Super Bowl, which would only create more value for him, more value for the Cowboys.

"So we're fired up about it and still have nothing but 100 percent belief in Dak and his future with the Cowboys, and that we can ultimately get a deal done. He's special. As Jerry and I have said, we are 110 percent behind him, and ultimately feel like we'll get this done."

Prescott will play 2020 under the $31.4 million franchise tag.

"I don't want to use 'close' in terms of negotiations. You either get a deal done or you don't," Jones said. "We didn't quite get it done. I wouldn't put blame on either side. It's just one of those things, when you're talking about a deal as big as this is -- for our team, not just for Dak but our entire team, the ramifications that it has -- we certainly want to get it done right. I know he's respectful of (owner) Jerry (Jones) and myself of what we're trying to get accomplished, just as we are with him."

Damien Williams Opts Out Of 2020 Season

Jul 29, 2020 5:15 PM

Damien Williams has opted out of playing in the 2020 season.

Williams finished 2019 with 711 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns in the regular season. Williams also had a pair of touchdowns for the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super bowl.

“As an organization, we certainly understand and respect Damien’s choice, knowing it was made in the best interest of his family,” Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said in a statement. “He means a lot to our football team as a player and a person, and we’re going to miss having him around this season.”

The Chiefs used a first round pick in 2020 on Clyde Edwards-Helaire at running back. Darwin Thompson and Darrell Williams are also options for the Chiefs.

49ers Optimistic About 'Tricky' Extension For George Kittle

Jul 29, 2020 9:35 AM

John Lynch says the San Francisco 49ers are confident they'll get an extension done with George Kittle.

The general manager said he didn't "see any reason why we wouldn't be able" to get a deal done despite concerns about what the coronavirus pandemic will do to the NFL's salary cap moving forward.

It was reported back in May that the two sides weren't close to a deal.

"I knew that it might be tricky because of, you know, the position that he plays and things of that nature -- finding the right number," Lynch said.

Seahawks Will Wait Until 2021 To Extend Jamal Adams

Jul 29, 2020 9:21 AM

The Seattle Seahawks gave up a huge haul to acquire Jamal Adams from the New York Jets, but they are in no rush to extend the All-Pro safety's contract.

Seattle sent two first-round picks to New York as part of the package.

According to sources, the Seahawks plan to wait until next year to open extension talks with Adams. There is a lot of uncertainty about what the COVID-19 pandemic will do to the NFL's salary cap going forward.

Aaron Rodgers Doesn't Expect To Finish Career With Packers

Jul 28, 2020 2:40 PM

Aaron Rodgers revealed he expects to finish his career on a team besides the Green Bay Packers. The Packers selected Jordan Love in the first round of the draft.

"I think that's probably what happens," said Rodgers. "Based on just the circumstances around everything, just look at the facts. They traded up, they drafted him, I would say they like him, they want to play him."

Rodgers signed a four-year, $134 million extension with the Packers in August of 2018.

Rodgers doesn't expect Love to wait to supplant him as he did early in his career with Brett Favre.

"Different scenario," Rodgers said. "Now I think quarterbacks are playing earlier, it gives some latitude for young coaches and GMs to play their guys, and I get it. I really do, I don't harbor any ill will about it."
